Blog Assignment #6, part 3

I know that you just finished teaching your first mini-lesson on Tuesday, but it's almost time to teach again!  Next Thursday (in one week), you will need to bring a rough draft of your next lesson plan with you to class.  This lesson plan must include all the components that your first lesson plan did.  Rather than writing these in class, we'll be doing a little bit of peer review to help each other improve our lessons before we actually present them.  Ideally, the weaknesses of this past teaching demo will be improved in the second demo.

So, think about what you need to improve on, and think about the kind of lesson that would allow you to show your growth.  Using any site you choose (check out the blogsites from the first week of class if you need ideas!), or simply coming up with it on your own, choose what you want to teach about next time.  In the comments to this post, tell what site and activity you plan to concentrate on (so that, again, we can make sure that not everyone is doing the same thing).  Using your student comment sheet, summarize what you want to improve upon and your own response to your teaching demo.  Also discuss what you will focus on in this second teaching demo.  Make sure you include your name!  Start writing your lesson plan (not on the blog) if there's time.

Please note: any group or pair work that you include in this lesson should take less than half of your time.  In other words, you as the teacher must discuss or present or instruct for at least half of your total teaching time.

You may need to finish this activity at home.  Please do so no later than the next class!

  1. I think I want to try and teach a lesson (maybe with a partner to give us a chance to work on our coordination practice) about prepositions with a shorter activity. This way I can have a better idea of what it is to actually 'teach' a lesson. I feel like doing pair-teaching, with a review of prepositions and a short activity about prepositions will help me focus in and grow. The website I will use was the website I picked in my original blog post. http://www.usingenglish.com/teachers/lesson-plans/
I also want to improve upon my giving of instructions and making the activity fun and relevant.

  2. Gerunds/Infinitives: (which I do not know much about--however, the class I'm currently teaching at Richland this summer is the most advanced class I've ever had...my current students ask more ?s than ever... so I want to be ready for this topic when I have to teach it in class!)
Jigsaw activity from "Fun with Grammar" book which accompanies the grammar book/s by Betty Azar.

    RE: Student Comment Sheet
I would like to explain my next lesson more clearly, and use less wordy verbiage. I will use a jigsaw activity to enable class interaction. I will not ask if people have any questions; instead, I will check for understanding by having students repeat what I taught them.

I felt good about my teaching demo. I was surprised by all the negative comments.

  3. Overall, I felt good about my instruction. I knew that the first activity was going to take too long, so I cut it short and I think that the transition could have gone more smoothly.

For my next lesson I think I am going to instruct my classmates on the use of definite and indefinite articles.

I am planning on improving by: decreasing wordiness, increasing hilarity, and defining clear instructions.

  4. I would like to focus on media literacy with my next lesson. Ideally, it will address bias and how to differentiate between news and commentary.

After looking at the evaluation, I had to giggle a bit. I know I frequently talk too fast, so after our demo day, I made sure to pay attention to myself speaking in class to see if it's something I normally do with my students. I found that I only tend to do this when I feel rushed for time, and in general often talk really slowly when I need to stretch out the time. For this lesson I'll definitely decrease the components so that I don't feel the rush to "get through" and can relax a bit. This might also make the lesson seem less overwhelming.

  5. I'm going to join Jason on his lesson idea and teach prepositions. I think it will be better than our last lesson because we will be more organized and prepared. I would also like to focus on giving clearer, slower directions and making sure everyone knows what we are doing and why it is relevant.

  6. I'm going to give my students clearer step-by-step instructions both for activities and homework assignments. This is what I will focus on in the next teaching demo. Also, showing my energy to students will be very important.

In the next lesson, I'm going talk about Subject-Verb Agreement. "Pair Interview" will be the main activity for this topic.

  7. I will again use color pictures to give students chances to freely generate multiple stories/opinions about pictures. This time, however, I will add interaction activities to stimulate student's speech production.

Here is a link for the pictures that I will use for the next class but I will modify them to make a space for vocabulary words next to the pictures (Thank you for all your comments on my previous mini-lecture. They all were very helpful and I am really trying to include all your suggestions for the next one).

I will practice enough to lower the level of nervousness.

  8. I am going to teach prefixes and suffixes. After my initial instruction, I'll use a worksheet or game (ideally) with either pairs or groups. The website I where I found several lesson plans/games to use is http://www.eslflow.com.

This time, I plan to practice this game in real-time, to make sure that I have it down and don't feel like I'm forgetting something.

  9. I think I'm going to work on giving and receiving driving directions. I definitely will include some student interaction work, be it small group or pairs, because I really want to work on classroom management. Also, this is something I'm working on with my language partner.
